PLANNING BRIEF FOR THE URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT

RAIN SEMESTER 2021/2022 SESSION

TITLE:   URBAN RENEWAL PROJECT ___________________­­­­­­­­­­­­_______

Preamble: The 400 Level students are expected to carry out Urban Renewal Project in ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­_______________ Owerri Imo State. This area presents visible characteristics of slum hence; it is suitable for an academic project in fulfillment for the course requirement of Planning Studio V (Urban Renewal) URP 401.

 

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

The students are expected to obtain the base map of the area preferably with Google Earth, GIS or any convenient software which will reveal the current situation of the area. The students are required to carry out the following studies to generate data base for the Urban Renewal Project.

 

1.     Baseline studies

2.     Physiographic studies

3.     Population studies

4.     Land use studies

5.     Housing stock studies

6.     Community facilities studies

7.     Vacant land studies

8.     Institutional (utility) studies

9.     Transportation studies

·        Land use inventory

·        Population inventory

·        Vehicle ownership inventory

·        Vehicular and person travel inventory

·        Transport facilities inventory

·        Inventory of economic activities

·        Inventory of available monetary resource

·        Trip generation inventory

·        Economic base studies

 

 

10.                         Urban Environmental Quality studies

11.                         Urban Management studies

 

METHODS OF DATA COLLECTION FOR THE URBAN RENEWAL

a.         Interview method

b.        Questionnaire method

 

Note: The students are also required to carry out a complete enumeration of the households and buildings in the project area. They are also to make use of digital camera and other instruments that will aid them in data collection.

 

OUTPUT

The output will come in two phases - Graphic presentation in form of Designs and Technical report

1.     Design

The design is a full Autocad design and partly manual design

i)       Autocad:

The Autocad design will include a total of 10 maps namely

a)     The Updated map

b)    Location map

c)     Existing Land use map

d)    Existing Building use map

e)     Existing Floor height map

f)      Building condition map

g)     Environmental condition/facility/utility map

h)    Proposals: Alternative A

i)                        Alternative B

j)       Action Area map

 

        ii)  The manual design:

              This will include only 3 sheets

Sheet 1 - Alternative A

Sheet 2 – Alternative B

Sheet 3 – Action Area map

Note: The manual designs will be the same as the Autocad designs.

2) Technical report

The report must be comprehensive enough and must include among others

·        Historical perspective of the area

·        Goals and objectives of the project

·        Problems and potentials

·        Justification of the renewal Project

·        Urban renewal strategies adopted

·        Data analysis and presentation

·        Results of all the studies undertaken

·        Phasing plan of the project

·        Costing

·        Urban Renewal agency etc

Note: The designs, maps and technical report must be presented in soft bounded A3 paper and the three sheet manual design will be of same paper size and must be presented in a portforlio.
